Where we work

Launching an HVAC brand in Prince Edward Island

PEI is a small, close-knit market where heat pumps are already the main system in more than a third of homes and oil still heats more than a quarter. A launch here lives or dies on reputation and service.

Prince Edward Island is the smallest provincial market for an HVAC launch, and in some ways the most advanced. Heat pumps are already the primary heating system in more than a third of homes, yet oil still heats more than a quarter. That combination makes PEI a market for service, replacement and conversion rather than first-time installs alone. In a province this size, a newcomer's reputation travels quickly, in both directions.

The market

Charlottetown and Summerside are the two anchors, with Stratford and Cornwall as part of the Charlottetown area. The province's largest municipalities are Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall.

Because the island is compact, a single base can often serve most of it, but drive times still matter for emergency work. A sensible launch service area is Charlottetown with Stratford and Cornwall first, then Summerside, then the eastern and western ends of the island as capacity allows.

Size it with 2021 Census dwelling counts for those municipalities and our market sizing method. In a small market, the year-one share assumption matters even more, because each percentage point is a handful of jobs.

Fuel mix and season

More than a third of PEI homes already rely on a heat pump as their main system, and a large oil-heated segment remains. Statistics Canada's 2023 figures show a heat pump as the main system in roughly 36% of Island homes, with oil the main heating energy in 28%, electricity in 18% and wood in 8%.

For a launch, that means:

  • Heat pump service and replacement for the large installed base is a dependable, recurring line.
  • Oil-to-heat-pump conversions remain a big audience, even without a current rebate.
  • Backup and dual systems come up often in homes that pair a heat pump with oil or wood.

The climate is maritime, with cold, snowy winters moderated by the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence. Heat pumps carry much of the winter load, so winter service response is a key selling point.

Regulators to know

PEI uses several specific contractor and personnel licences that HVAC companies should check early. For orientation only:

Programs as of October 2026

Most PEI heat pump incentives have closed, so a launch can't rely on them. The efficiencyPEI page states that free heat pump program applications are closed. The residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15, although purchases made from 2025-04-15 to 2026-04-15 may still be claimed within one year of purchase.

The 2026-06-29 federal agreement expands PEI's free insulation program for income-qualified homeowners, which is relevant content for customers even though it isn't a heating rebate. Check current details with the province before marketing any program.

How we would approach a PEI launch

  1. Decide the model: a small local team or an extension of a nearby Maritime operation.
  2. Lead with heat pump service and replacement for the installed base.
  3. Make conversion pages honest about the lack of current rebates, and focus on running cost and comfort.
  4. Build reviews deliberately, because word of mouth carries extra weight in a small province.
  5. Keep paid search narrow and lean; search volumes are small. The launch paid search service explains how we scope it.

For a small market, BCWide.ca, at 3× leads in 90 days, is a useful example from our HVAC work. See the results page and the launch sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Is PEI big enough for a new HVAC branch?

It's a small market, so a full staffed branch has to be sized carefully. Many companies serve PEI as an extension of a nearby Maritime operation, or with a small local team focused on heat pump service and replacement. Run the numbers for Charlottetown and Summerside before committing.

What licences do HVAC companies need in PEI?

PEI Inspection Services lists several: boiler and pressure vessel work requires a Mechanical Contractor Licence, propane appliance servicing requires an LP Gas Personnel Licence, and plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence. Confirm what applies to your work with the province.

Are PEI heat pump rebates still open?

As of October 2026, the efficiencyPEI residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15, and the free heat pump program page says applications are closed. A customer who bought a system in the final year of the program, up to 2026-04-15, may still have a claim window open, and a launch page can point them to efficiencyPEI. Check with efficiencyPEI before mentioning any rebate.

How do we stand out in such a small market?

Through service and reputation. In a small province, customers ask neighbours and read reviews closely. Consistent response times, clear pricing and a steady flow of honest reviews matter more than ad budget.
